Summary of the second business day of the Business Forum “Strategic Partnership 1520”
On June 8, the session entitled “The Market of Rolling Stock. Difficulties of Rejuvenation”, sponsored by United Wagon Company RPC PJSC, opened the business program of the forum’s second day.
The speakers discussed how the innovative car concept is changing and what the next generation cars will be. Alexey Sokolov, First Deputy CEO for Strategy and Product of United Wagon Company RPC PJSC, spoke on the new directions, United Wagon Company is working on today. “The main directions of the freight car manufacturing development are the enhanced car efficiency, and reduction of operating costs,” he noted. During the session, Sergey Kaletin, President of SG-Trans OJSC and Vice President of OPZT, proposed to transition railway cars to cassette-type bearings. According to him, car owners need to be involved in the program, and its implementation should be supported by the state.
The session entitled “Transportation Hubs. From a Railway Platform to a Transport Hub” was sponsored by the Moscow Metro. Mariya Mikhaylenko, Moderator of the discussion, Partner of the Competence Center “Transport and Infrastructure” of Roland Berger GmbH, said that today Russian railway stations were turning into multi-modal hubs to better connect railway, coach and air transportation.
Vitaly Votolevsky, Head of the Directorate of Railway Stations – Russian Railways’ subsidiary, said that the history of Russian railway stations came back more than 180 years, but the time had come to renovate them: “Our major challenge of today is to adapt architectural landmark railway stations to functional ones. And we already see the first examples of this approach.”
Another session, “Cargo Transportation. Improving Efficiency for Every Stakeholder”, sponsored by Novotrans company, continued the business program. According to Irina Olkhovskaya, Deputy CEO for Perspective Development and Work with Federal Authorities of Port Management Company LLC, the growing demand for export coal, actually, results in cargo flows diversification and emergence of the terminals non-adapted for coal reloading. “The amounts increase, but the facilities cannot cope,” she said.
In the course of the session, Alexey Shilo, Director for Commercial Activity of Russian Railways JSC and CEO of the Center for Commercial Transport Services, made a presentation on Electronic Trading Platform, a new service of Russian Railways, allowing to order the rolling stock delivery services on the website of Russian Railways JSC. “A transfer order is cleared in real-time, and a payment is also processed immediately, online. Thus, the client controls all order execution stages”, Alexey Shilo said.
The session entitled “Passenger Transportation. Face-to-face with every client” discussed how to upgrade passenger rolling stock when resources are limited and how to provide maximum comfort for the passengers on trains.
Petr Ivanov, CEO of JSC Federal Passenger Company, speaking on the passenger transportation innovations, said that 250 trains were equipped with shower facilities at passengers’ request. He also added that Russian Railways JSC provided access to senior management for passengers through communication channels. “Today, we are trying to improve customer treatment and to move from the so-called client-oriented approach to genuine customer care”, he added.
Within the framework of the forum, an agreement of understanding was signed between Sberbank and JSC High-Speed Rail Lines. The signatories were Petr Koltypin, Vice-President of Sberbank of Russia – Chairman of the Board of the Volgo-Vyatsky Bank of Sberbank, and Alexander Misharin, CEO of JSC High-Speed Rail Lines. “The document defined the general principles of cooperation: financial consulting in qualification of regional contractors involved in the project and collaboration with regional authorities”, Sberbank’s Press Office reported.
Alexander Misharin in the “How High-Speed Railway will Impact Rail Sector: 7 Major Tracks” presentation, described how high-speed railway have changed the present-day life in Russia and what projects we could expect in the future. “We consider ourselves technorealists. The HSR project is the today of technology. We are not the first in this area, but we use the international expertise,” he said. Alexander Misharin also added that through the development of high speed running and new technologies, Russia could pave the way for progress. “The HSR means new technologies, economic growth and demand for research and development”, he summed up.
The forum ended with the plenary discussion entitled “New Silk Road. 1520 at the Forefront of Eurasian Trade”. The participants discussed the results and prospects of the rail transit transportation on the China-Europe route.
Alexander Misharin noted that through participation in Eurasian economic integration and the “Silk Road Economic Belt” initiative, Russia solved several tasks: the formation of a new economic model, which purpose is to transform the Eurasian space into the most convenient environment for the trade flows movement, and the development of the transport and logistics infrastructure, allowing to capitalize Russia’s geographical advantages.
“I would like to remind that the railway transport has a huge advantage over the marine transport – due to lesser distances cargo shipments from Asia to Europe are delivered faster, which pleases the customers who value delivery speed. However, the cost of the door-to-door bulk cargo transportation by rail and sea transport is comparable,” – Alexander Misharin noted in his speech.
Oleg Belozerov, CEO of Russian Railways JSC, described the main results of the forum. According to him, the most important thing today is logistics. “From my point of view, logistics and collaboration are the key things we need to focus on. It is necessary to move away from unfair nonbusiness competition to healthy cooperation,” Oleg Belozerov said.
